On certain holidays, scores of drivers get behind the wheel when they shouldn't. But the deadliest holiday isn't the first that springs to mind.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I am going to my Mum's for Thanksgiving, around the hills and through the woods with my Son, will consume 0% alcohol whilst there and drive in both directions looking for idiots impaired, all backroads 15 miles or so, staying away from the main roads, found I get better mileage, rarely see another car once away from the main roads, too bad gas prices have fallen, the land barges (SUVS) seem to be coming back, you know the moron with the barge that he cannot keep in his lane, fortunately my Audi Avant can dodge them, my favorite in parking lots is to just stop, make the idiot back up to make the turn whilst shaking my head noooo

I am a trauma RN and sadly there are ALWAYS more then enough people willing to risk their lives, yours and your families. The cries and soul shattering screams of mothers/fathers that echo through the halls when they find out their son/daughter/spouse is dead (sometimes their entire family) haunts me. I can not conceive how they suffer. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

Everybody is down on smokers, it's time to do the same on drinking.  There is actually no excuse or reason to drink any at all.

You can't tell a drunk to stop drinking but you can tell them not to get behind the wheel of a car. First time drunk drivers need much more harsher sentences to say nothing of repeat offenders.

Agreed.  But for whatever reason, drunks continue to receive light little slaps on their wrist's for driving while intoxicated.  The same thing goes with those that have been convicted of killing people due to driving while intoxicated---they seem to be getting pretty light sentences considering the gravity of what they have done.  Making them attach yellow/red license plates to their vehicles, suspending their licenses, fining them and attaching those little breath test machines to their steering columns just isn't cutting it!  I think that it is totally abhorrent that low life low life defense attorneys (like this one:  http://www.topgun-lawyer.com/dui_faq.htm)  keep getting drunks off of the hook and teaching them how to beat the system so that they can keep getting behind the wheel plastered.  It makes you wonder if these same defense attorneys would feel a bit differently, say one of the drunks they got off, killed someone that they cared about!

CelticPride the defense attorneys are only doing their job which is assuring that the defendant is getting a fair trial. What I object to is the laws that let off DUI offenders get off so easy. Have you listened to http://www.celticradio.net/?

Hey Merle!  I am fully aware of the fact that the defense attorneys are "just doing their jobs", but that doesn't make it right, now does it?  Ensuring that they get a fair trial should not encompass teaching them how to beat the system so that they can keep on re-offending.  And no, I have not listened to celtic.radio.net.  My username is in reference to the Boston Celtics, not Celtic heritage.  But thanks anyway!  :)

YES, we exterminated the Native People here,  YES, we took their land.  YES, we even fought each other in a bloody Civil War.  YES, we subjected people of color to slavery and apartied.  YES, we have treated women and other groups unfairly.   YES, we have plundered our environment.  YES, we have squandered our energy and natural resources with unbridled consumerism.  YES, we did all these bad things and more.  But also ....YES there is a lot of goodness and kindness in our land.  YES, our democratic ideals, the many ways we revere the universe, and our feeling of family are all beautiful things.  But how does this measure up to our past.  Should the Native Peoples, the African-Americans, and the others who have suffered also give thanks, and forgive us.  Well, this is what I believe......that....all in all ....when the final score is tallied..... when we are standing there to be judged ...the one thing that stands out about Americans......the one thing that may redeem us....is....WE ARE STILL TRYING TO BE BETTER!  The past is past..... AND........WE CAN make amends to the Native Peoples and each other.  WE CAN heal the racial divide.  WE CAN treat our environment better.  WE CAN truly be that great, and ethical nation.   WE CAN be that country where the world  looks to us for the power of our example and not just the example of our power.   WE CAN strive to truly be "as a city upon a hill"  ....the real one .....not the one as Bradford envisioned ......but the one  Martin Luther King envisioned in his "I Have A Dream" speech.  Let that be one of the meanings of  Thanksgiving - that in addition to giving thanks for our families and the food and our religion, we give thanks to a vision of our country of WHAT WE CAN BE and that we can still try to get there.

Yep! and Christmas too, and St Pat's Day, and what abou that Easter.  What's the point of this stupid headline?  Are we to think that Thanksgiving is the culprit in here?  At least that's what the headline seems to lead to.  Maybe next time we make a study on that irrational Ramadan celebration where just about hundreds if not thousands of pilgrims get crushed to death in one of those typical stampeeds.  Of course, MSNBC is not going to touch that hot potato; bunch of cowards! they attack our Christian celebration in whichever form possible but won't dare to criticize Islam.  Enough I say!
